Meet Alethia
Enough of Alethia's story to understand the pattern across her professional, governance and community life.
I have spent much of my life working in places where decisions have consequences beyond the thing immediately in front of you. Professionally, that has meant working in financial services, business continuity and third-party disaster readiness: understanding dependencies, managing risk, thinking ahead and asking what happens elsewhere when one part of a system changes.
In public governance, it has meant serving as an Upper Grand District School Board trustee and being selected by my fellow trustees to serve as Vice-Chair. That work has reinforced how important it is to ask good questions, work across a table and understand the people who will live with the decisions we make.
And in community, it has meant building things meant to last. I founded the Dufferin County Canadian Black Association in 2020 and chaired Shelburne's Anti-Black Racism, Racism and Discrimination Task Force. Those experiences taught me that community leadership is not simply about having a voice. It is about creating the conditions for more people to participate and be heard.
I moved to Shelburne in 2014. I ran for Council in 2022 because I believed I could contribute to the town's future. I still do. The next Council will make decisions whose effects will reach well beyond a single meeting or budget year. I want to bring my experience, curiosity and whole-picture approach to that work.
